Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Cancel Your Traditional Gym Membership

1. Contracts

If you are like me everyone hates a contract. In a world of maximizing profits many potential gym goers are sold into signing a contract for 1 to 2 years with an early withdrawal penalty. These global gyms use this penalty as a scare tactic to keep you hanging around regardless of whether you are getting anything out of the experience or not. I do not believe in contracts. If someone wants to prepay at a discount for an extended period of time is a great option. No one should be forced into an extended contract with the pretense of saving a few dollars. The contracted time frame should be up to the individual customer. Stay away from gyms that offer contracts with early withdrawal penalties. You should have the freedom of choice and have the expectation to pay a fair market price on the length of service you choose.

2. To much of the wrong equipment, to little of the right equipment

Does your global gym have 20 elliptical machines for every one row machine? Does your global gym have 10 machines for every free weight? Does your global gym have at least one set of Olympic lifting bumper plates which allows you to drop the weight without damaging the floor or equipment? How many standard pull-up bars are available? These are just a few question that should be asked when looking into a gym membership. You want a gym that offers equipment that is functional in nature. Make sure to always ask yourself the question "will this piece of equipment in someway help me lift a large amount of weight off the ground, over my head or to another location, in a decent amount of time without injuring yourself.  More help smith machine vs squat rack vs power rack

3. No individual attention

Personal Trainers cost money and are rarely included in the membership fee. Most gym goers go to the gym with no plan other than to play on the equipment for an hour or so and then go home. Doing something is better than doing nothing, but the question remains are you getting the most value out of the membership you are paying for? Having a coach is very beneficial to doing your best in any activity. All of the best athletes in the world have coaches or personal trainers who push them to the absolute max. I recommend finding a good personal trainer or finding a CrossFit gym or similar gym structure where an instructor or trainer will be there for every workout and coach you every step of the way on how to achieve your physical fitness goals.

4. Cookie Cutter Personal Trainers

A personal trainer should do just that, make the training sessions "personal" to your goals. Many global gym personal trainers are following a standard system and many do not have the in-depth experience or knowledge of personal training. A personal trainer with several months to several years of training experience is best. I would go as far to ask your personal trainer for testimonials from past clients which is another method of proving his or her worth. Your personal trainer should have a keen eye for and be a student of human movement.

5. Low Motivation

Your typical global gym is best suited for highly self motivated people. Matter of fact when you sign up there should be a prerequisite on the contract that says you must be self motivate to get the full benefit of this gym membership. The majority of people are attracted to these gyms because they are big and you could potentially come and workout without having a conversation with anyone. CrossFit Gyms and similar structured gyms tap into human natures competitive spirit. Competition usually brings out the best in people when they know that bragging rights are at stake.

Bottom line a gym membership should be a one stop shop to take care of all your physical fitness needs. Make sure you are paying for the right equipment, the right motivational atmosphere, trained coaches, and a personalized training program to meet your physical fitness goals.
